Guinea’s Ministry of National Education, Literacy, Technical Education and Vocational Training launched its first Mobile Training Unit on 12 August, at the Nongo Centre grounds in the Lambanyi commune of Conakry. The first cohort trains 41 young people.
The unit itself is a converted truck, funded by UNICEF Guinea, designed to deliver hands-on training on site rather than requiring young people to travel to a fixed centre. The trades taught vary depending on the source: building electricity and sanitary plumbing according to MediaguinĂ©e, boilermaking and welding according to Guineenews. That discrepancy hasn’t been resolved by a single official source, and is worth clarifying before repeating exact trade breakdowns.
The initiative sits under Simandou Academy, the training component of the Simandou 2040 programme. The stated goal is territorialisation, bringing qualifying training closer to young people outside urban centres rather than concentrating provision in Conakry. One ministry official cited Tougué, Dalaba and Koubia as examples of areas targeted for future rollout.
UNICEF, the project’s funding partner, frames this as a reintegration tool. Its Education and Protection lead referenced Guinea’s NEET population, young people neither in school, employment nor training, and children outside the education system entirely. Vocational training is presented as an alternative path for this group, in a country where the number of out-of-system youth remains high.
